What are CBN Gummies?

CBN gummies are legal hemp-based products infused with large concentrations of cannabinol (CBN). Per federal law, CBN gummies are only legal when made with hemp-derived CBN, as opposed to marijuana-derived CBN.

What’s the difference? The 2018 Agriculture Improvement Act (Farm Bill) defines hemp as the Cannabis Sativa L. plant and its derivatives, with less than 0.3% total delta-9 THC. Therefore, when taken from hemp, CBN is legal and can be present in unlimited amounts.

CBN gummies usually consist of a CBN and CBD mixture. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid with therapeutic value and a potential relaxant in large doses.

What is CBN?

CBN was identified in the 1800s and first synthesized in 1940 – landmarks achieved before any other cannabinoid. More recently, scientists have learned that CBN is a derivative of THC, with the latter degrading into CBN after exposure to ultraviolet light (sunlight) and oxygen.

Naturally, hemp and cannabis plants contain very little CBN, with the compound classed as a minor or secondary cannabinoid. Consequently, we have limited research on CBN and its effects. However, like most cannabinoids, it appears to do much of its work within the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Research shows CBN is a partial agonist of the CB1 and CB2 receptor – a trait shared by THC. However, in contrast to THC, CBN has a lower affinity and binds less strongly with these receptors. Even so, many researchers consider CBN to be mildly psychotropic.

Will CBN help me sleep?

Judging by the popularity of CBN gummies for sleep and the thousands of positive reports online, CBN is an effective natural sleep agent. That said, there isn’t much scientific research to back it up – although this is due to a lack of research studies suggesting that CBN doesn’t work.

In fact, we only have one relevant study to draw upon, which was published in Pharmacology nearly 50 years ago.

The clinical trial involved giving doses of CBN and CBN, combined with THC, to five male volunteers. The researchers determined that CBN may have sedative properties, which become more intense when taken with THC.

However, the small scale of the trial and the lack of a representative population means we can’t draw too many conclusions from it. The modern-day anecdotes and growth of CBN products for sleep speak more to the substance’s sedative effects.

Types of CBN extract

Not all brands have taken the same approach with CBN gummies. Each hemp extract has benefits and disadvantages, depending on your situation. Here’s what you can expect from the three different types of CBN extract.

Full-spectrum CBN: Whole-plant hemp extracts have the lot – a complete profile of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Cannabis scientists consider whole-plant hemp extracts more effective thanks to the synergistic entourage effects.

However, full-spectrum CBN gummies can legally contain up to 0.3% THC. While this adds therapeutic value and isn’t enough to get you high, you could theoretically fail a drug test with regular consumption.

Broad-spectrum CBN: This type of extract preserves much of the entourage effect while taking the THC out of the equation. THC-free, broad-spectrum CBN gummies still have all the other cannabinoids and terpenes but pose no risk of a failed drug test.

CBN-isolate: Gummies made with CBN-isolate consist of cannabinol only and no other hemp compounds. These are ideal if you want to see whether CBN works without complicating things with any other cannabinoids. CBN-isolate gummies have no THC whatsoever.

What to Look For When Buying CBN Gummies

You should always research before purchasing CBN gummies and other hemp-based products. Finding high-quality CBN is easy when you know what to look for, but the industry can be a little confusing for newbies with many brands and different products.

Let me tell you more about what I looked for when selecting my top five CBN gummies.

Third-party lab reports

The only way to avoid getting scammed with hemp products is to buy third-party tested products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate CBN gummies, hence why the market is rife with con artists and grifters.

Companies can make all kinds of claims about the potency of their CBN products without facing legal repercussions. Third-party or independent testing cleans up the industry and separates genuine hemp brands from fakes.

A CBN gummy manufacturer will send a product off for independent testing, and the lab will send back a certificate of analysis covering legality, safety, and potency. A full cannabinoid breakdown clarifies how much CBN is present and if the gummies have less than 0.3% THC. The safety assessment checks for any heavy metals, pesticides, or mycotoxins.

Legit companies can then display the certificate of analysis next to their products so customers know they are genuine. Brands that cannot show an independent lab report are almost certainly up to no good.

Cannabinoid concentrations

The cannabinoid breakdown of a CBN gummy product tells you how potent it is and whether it’s worth the money. Expect to pay more for gummies with larger amounts of CBN and prepare for more intense sedative effects.

Most brands have a headline figure on how much CBN or hemp extract is in their gummies. Always check whether this stat refers to the CBN content or the combined amount of CBN and CBD.

For example, a company might claim their gummies have 30mg of extract, but that could feasibly be 25mg CBD and only 5mg CBN. That doesn’t mean it’s an inferior product, but you shouldn’t pay as much for it as a product with pure CBN.

Terpenes are common in hemp-based products, either as part of a full-spectrum hemp extract or as a separate addition. These non-psychoactive compounds have therapeutic effects and also provide gummies with natural flavoring.

Since CBN gummies are mostly marketed for sleep purposes, look for products with relaxing indica terpenes, such as linalool, limonene, myrcene, humulene, and beta-caryophyllene. Gummies with terpenes are more effective than those without.

Other ingredients

Coconut or any MCT-rich oil is an excellent ingredient to have in CBN gummies. Medium-chained triglycerides (MCTs) are fatty acids that make cannabinoids more soluble. Increasing solubility boosts how much of a CBN dose becomes active, making CBN gummies more effective.

Most CBN gummies do not contain melatonin, another sleep-promoting supplement. Melatonin is a natural hormone and popular sleep remedy, but it can cause bad dreams and grogginess and interact with several prescription meds.

Keep an eye out for CBN edibles with melatonin, as this ingredient could affect your experience.

How to Store Your CBN Gummies

Store CBN gummies at a cool temperature, in dark, dry conditions, and away from direct sunlight. Once opened, I suggest refrigerating CBN gummies to prevent melting.

CBN gummies are mildly psychoactive and induce drowsiness, so keep out of reach of children – either store them up high or in a locked cupboard.

How Long Do CBN Gummies Last?

On average, CBN gummies last for between six to eight hours. Some users report that larger dosages remain active for longer. Bodyweight, age, and speed of metabolism can all affect how long CBN gummies last.

CBN gummies often do not start working until 45 minutes to one hour after consumption. This is normal, and you should resist the urge to take more while you wait for the effects to kick in.

Hastily taking a second dose could cause excessive drowsiness. Moreover, it’s probably not a cost-effective way of consuming CBN. Start with small amounts and build up incrementally.

Purchasing CBN Gummies Online vs. Shops Near Me

Online hemp vendors are the best place to buy CBN gummies and are much preferable to brick-and-mortar stores near you. I say this for reasons of convenience, cost, and safety.

A legit online hemp retailer has more to lose than a convenience store or gas station and takes more care to stock genuine CBN gummies. For example, CBD Genesis has built a reputation on only selling top-shelf, third-party-tested hemp products.

Secondly, CBN gummies are fairly rare compared to CBD products, and there’s no guarantee you would even find them at your local store. You don’t have this issue when shopping online; you can choose between multiple brands. Not to mention, purchasing CBN online is cheaper than from a brick-and-mortar store with steep running costs.
