What are CBD Moon Rocks?
CBD moon rocks are hemp-based products with high concentrations of non-intoxicating cannabidiol (CBD). Moon rocks – or asteroids – normally consist of CBD-rich hemp flower, CBD-isolate concentrate or distillate, and hemp kief.
Moon rock manufacturers soak or spray the hemp flower with the concentrate before coating it with kief to complete the lunar look. Soaking CBD moon rocks tends to increase potency and spread the CBD more consistently throughout the product.
CBD moon rocks generally contain anywhere between 30 to 70% CBD – much higher than regular hemp flower, which typically tops out at just over 20% CBD. The enhanced strength of moon rocks appeals to those who cannot get adequate relief from other CBD products.
What is CBD?
CBD is a naturally occurring cannabinoid from the cannabis plant, renowned worldwide for its non-intoxicating nature and intriguing therapeutic potential. CBD has opposite effects to THC and cannot get you stoned or high like traditional marijuana.
In recent years, hemp-derived CBD products have exploded in popularity following the US government’s move to legalize hemp. CBD’s possible health benefits have also come under more scrutiny.
CBD influences the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Research shows that the ECS may regulate mood, memory, pain sensitivity, cognitive processes, and more. Much remains unknown about the ECS’s true role, which scientists didn’t identify until the 1990s.

Smoking: Use CBD moon rocks to strengthen a joint, or smoke them directly in glassware (i.e., bong, pipe, or bubbler). Start with a couple of hits, and give the CBD at least 30 minutes to take effect before upping your dose.
Vaping: Minimize the consumption risks by vaping moon rocks. British experts estimate that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking. You may need a vaporizer compatible with waxes. Otherwise, mix the moon rocks with flower and vape in a dry herb device.
The legal status of CBD moon rocks
Moon rocks are legal but must contain less than 0.3% THC on a dry-weight basis. The 2018 Agriculture Improvement Act (Farm Bill) legalized CBD and all other hemp cannabinoids but enforced a strict cap on THC.
With highly-potent moon rocks, the low THC limit can cause headaches. Some companies struggle to keep THC levels below 0.3%, as certain third-party lab tests show. These brands are playing with fire, but so are you if caught in possession.
CBD moon rocks with more than 0.3% THC are classified as Schedule 1 drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. Consider this when buying CBD moon rocks and other hemp-based CBD products.

Because the CBD concentration in moon rocks is so high, most companies use indica terpenes to enhance the relaxing effects. But that’s not always the case – indeed, the moon rocks from Fern Valley Farms fit a hybrid description.
How to Store Your CBD Moon Rocks
Store the moon rocks in dark, cool, and dry conditions to prevent degradation, melting, and moisture exposure. Keep moon rocks in an airtight container to protect them from oxidation.
