What is CBC Oil?

Cannabichromene (CBC) oil is a tincture product containing hemp extract and less than 0.3% THC. Some tinctures contain pure CBC-isolate, while others mix multiple cannabinoids together.

Unlike most cannabinoids, CBC appears not to act on cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system. However, CBC prevents the breakdown of natural endocannabinoids such as anandamide by acting on TRPV1 and TRPA1 receptors.

CBC sometimes takes center stage in a tincture, but more commonly serves in a complementary role. This secondary cannabinoid does not yet have the profile of CBD, CBG, and delta-8, but is growing in popularity because of its impressive therapeutic potential.

CBC is legal in the United States if it is derived from the hemp plant. In 2018, the federal government passed the Agriculture Improvement Act (Farm Bill). The act legalized the Cannabis Sativa L. plant and its derivatives, providing the total delta-9-THC content is less than 0.3% on a dry weight basis.

As a secondary cannabinoid, hemp plants do not naturally produce as much CBC as CBD. However, growers are working hard to cultivate strains with higher levels of CBC.

Many CBC products contain medium-chained triglyceride (MCT) oil. A popular ingredient in hemp products, MCT oil makes cannabinoids more effective by enhancing their bioavailability.

In layman’s terms, a dose of CBC mixed with MCT oil is stronger than the same dose of CBC without it.

Benefits of CBC oil

Before going further, I want to stress that CBC does not yet have any approved medical uses. However, researchers are excited about the cannabinoid’s properties, and I want to share what they’ve found with you.

Firstly, CBC is completely non-psychoactive – it won’t get you high, even in enormous dosages. That may disappoint recreational users, but for those seeking therapeutic relief, the absence of intoxicating effects is a major plus.

Anti-inflammatory: Studies have shown that CBC has some intriguing anti-inflammatory properties. Interestingly, this 2012 paper found that CBC works outside of the traditional cannabinoid receptor mechanism.

CBC’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects may also combat acne, a common skin condition that remains notoriously difficult to treat.

Anti-anxiety: CBC appears to have more potent anti-anxiety properties than CBD, according to Steep Hill Labs. Future research should explore how CBC soothes anxiety – it may have a mediating effect on GABA receptors.

Mood-booster: Studies on rodents have found that CBC has potent antidepressant properties, as referenced by Dr. Ethan Russo in a 2011 paper. This is exciting, as neurological research on rodents is often replicated in humans.

How to take CBC oil

Sublingual absorption: The most convenient and efficient way of taking CBC oil is under the tongue. Sublingual absorption delivers rapid effects and is ideal if you need quick relief from symptoms.

Hold the oil under the tongue for as long as possible to maximize absorption into the bloodstream. You should start noticing the effects within a few minutes.

In foods and beverages: Mixing CBC oil into foods and beverages is a crafty trick to make the effects last longer, which is handy if you’re suffering from chronic symptoms. If using CBC tincture oil as a food ingredient, add the oil to the recipe as late as possible.

Topical application: While an inefficient way to use CBC oil, you can apply tinctures to the skin. Topical application of CBC may alleviate pain and inflammation, and help to clear up acne. I recommend mixing CBC oil with another skin cream so that you can apply it liberally.

What to Look For When Buying CBC Oil

There aren’t too many brands specializing in CBC oil right now. While CBC is often found in full-spectrum and broad-spectrum tinctures, it’s rarely the primary cannabinoid in a product. However, a few hemp companies are beginning to recognize the possibilities of CBC.

There are some well-known and reputable hemp brands selling CBC, such as NuLeaf Naturals and 3Chi. But if you choose not to go with one of my top five picks, here’s what you should look for when buying CBC tincture oil.

Third-party certificates of analysis

Third-party lab reports instill confidence in a brand, and you should be very cautious toward companies that cannot show you certificates of analysis.

Third-party testing helps to stop scammers and cowboy companies in the hemp industry, which is not currently regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In the context of CBC, a third-party lab report will confirm how much CBC is in a tincture and if the product is legal with less than 0.3% THC. Any heavy metals and residual solvents in a product will also be flagged up.

Some companies claim to go the extra mile and use cGMP manufacturing standards. While not a requirement, it’s encouraging to see hemp companies following FDA-standard protocols. Even so, you should still seek out a certificate of analysis.

Product potency

Always check how much CBC and other cannabinoids are in a product before purchasing. Some brands market tinctures as “CBC oil” when they only have a small amount of CBC. Given CBC’s rarity, expect to pay more for products with high quantities of CBC.

Unless you want pure CBC, I recommend CBC tinctures made with full-spectrum extracts. Tinctures with a myriad of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids are more likely to produce the entourage effect.

You may find tinctures that combine CBC with delta-8. While these products are legal, bear in mind that delta-8 is psychoactive and could make you fail a drug test.

Other ingredients

I prefer CBC tinctures that contain MCT oil for the bioavailability boost. Since CBC tinctures are relatively expensive, any ingredient that makes them more effective is welcome!

Full-spectrum CBC oil often contains terpenes – the Blue Key CBD product in my top five list is a good example. Terpenes provide natural flavoring and additional therapeutic effects.

You may find tinctures that blend in extra terpenes for specific benefits, such as pain or anxiety relief.

How to Store Your CBC Oil

Keep your CBC oil away from direct sunlight, in a cool, dark, dry place, such as your medicine cabinet. Store out of reach of children. Even though CBC is non-psychoactive, it’s still not intended for children.

Ensure that the bottle cap remains securely fastened when not in use, or oxidation could degrade the effectiveness of your tincture.

How Long does CBC Oil Last?

A typical CBC oil experience lasts for about three hours when taken under the tongue. CBC oil consumed in foods and beverages will remain active in your system for several hours longer. CBC oil applied to the skin should provide several hours of relief.

Sublingual absorption of CBD oil leads to fast-acting effects. The oil should start kicking in after a few minutes, with relief increasing before peaking after about 40 minutes. After an hour or so, the effects will gradually taper off.

If you need constant relief throughout the day, take a second dose of CBC oil after two to three hours. Large doses of CBC oil may induce powerful sedative effects. Avoid driving and operating heavy machinery if you feel drowsy.

Purchasing CBC Oil Online vs. Shops Near Me

Like what you’ve read and are curious about experiencing CBC oil? This hot new hemp product is making waves and vendors are sitting up and taking notice. But there are compelling arguments for buying CBC oil online instead of local stores. Let’s discuss.

With CBC oil still fairly new, the chances of you finding products at a brick-or-mortar store are slim. Dispensaries may stock CBC oil, but gas stations, convenience stores, and headshops probably won’t – and if they do, you should be careful.

Scammers are always on the lookout for unwitting retailers, and new products like CBC oil are unfortunately a good opportunity for them. It’s easier to trick non-specialist hemp stores with sketchy products than reputable hemp vendors.

Always stick with trustworthy online hemp stores such as CBD Genesis. When selecting products, and especially a new range of products, legit vendors take extra care to ensure what they are stocking is third-party tested.

Moreover, online stores can sell CBC oil much cheaper than brick-and-mortar shops. When a company has fewer overheads – such as rent and staff to pay – they can afford to offer products for a few bucks less. If physical stores are selling cheap CBC, you should seriously question where it came from.
